It can simply continue infinitely, creating an ever-changing pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aperiodic tiling<\/strong> is sometimes called forbidden symmetry as it challenges our association between <strong>repetition and symmetry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The defining trait of an aperiodic tiling is that while it may have symmetrical qualities, it is not entirely symmetrical. The most famous example of an aperiodic tiling is <strong>penrose tiling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Penrose Tiling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Penrose tiles <strong>are popular in<\/strong> <strong>bathrooms<\/strong>, though they have also been used to tile large floor spaces such as those in universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will focus on penrose tiling as it is the most straightforward, containing only two prototiles<strong>, dart and kite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are made up of two triangles each, called Robinson\u2019s triangles. When combined, they form a rhombus, where all four sides have the same length and opposite sides are parallel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Laying <\/strong>Penrose Tile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the<strong> irregular pattern of aperiodic tiling<\/strong>, laying tiles in such a manner is <strong>much more complicated<\/strong>. However, it can be done as <strong>the principles of tiling<\/strong> remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to prepare your underlayment and substrate, mix your adhesive and grout, and have the right tools on hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1028\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/aperiodic-tiling.jpg\" alt=\"aperiodic tiling\" class=\"wp-image-1638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/aperiodic-tiling.jpg 1028w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/aperiodic-tiling-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/aperiodic-tiling-1024x523.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/aperiodic-tiling-768x392.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1028px) 100vw, 1028px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Laying penrose tiling<\/strong> requires a lot of planning and hard work, more so than periodic tiling. This is due to the <strong>complex nature of the pattern<\/strong>, which does not adhere to the rules of translational symmetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <strong>three ways to begin a penrose tiling.<\/strong> Using the dart, kite or dart and kite together, you can start the pattern with the following shapes: star, sun, ace, deuce, jack, king and queen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be noted that <strong>there are an infinite number of penrose tiling combinations for you to choose from<\/strong>. You can also find some generators <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/misc.0o0o.org\/penrose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">online<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"284\" height=\"177\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/images.png\" alt=\"aperiodic tiling\" class=\"wp-image-1633\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The sun and the star possess pentagonal symmetry and higher order versions of these shapes can be obtained via deflation, which <strong>adds greater detail<\/strong> to the tiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CUTTING APERIODIC TILE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to <strong>cutting your tiles to shape<\/strong>, fortunately there are no curves in the dart and kite penrose tile design, so the process itself is relatively straightforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve a nice clean edge, <strong>use a wet saw or an angle grinder<\/strong> to cut the tiles. Some improvisation will be involved towards the end of your installation and you will need to cut the outer tiles to fit the perimeter of the tiling area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not unusual in tiling. However, due to the <strong>infinite nature<\/strong> of aperiodic tiles, the entirety of the outer area will not align naturally with the perimeter of the tiling area. The ND-200 will allow you to easily make <strong>precise and intricate cuts<\/strong> to easily fit your tiles. It also has a water-cooling system to keep the blade cool while cutting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Angle Grinder and RUBI Diamond Blade<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/30888-csv-230-superpro-continuous-ceramic-tiles-diamond-blade-1-m-rubi-scaled-e1622036835309-1.jpg\" alt=\"aperiodic tiling\" class=\"wp-image-1643\" width=\"200\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An<strong> angle grinder<\/strong> is also a great option when cutting aperiodic shapes, due to its lightweight and portable size. You can even use formulas to come up with designs quickly and efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <strong>mark the tiles<\/strong> with arcs of <strong>different colours<\/strong>. Then, when matching the arcs together, you should begin to see a <strong>pattern form<\/strong>. This is because <strong>the pattern will develop outwardly from a single shape. <\/strong>From there, follow the blueprint and lay the tiles as you would normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to apply firm, even pressure when laying your tile onto the adhesive, and to <strong>inserting spacers between each tile for the grout<\/strong>. Once grouted, you may also want to apply sealing as this will protect the grout and give your tiles a nice, polished look.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always <strong>remember to clean<\/strong> as you go. Make sure to wipe away any excess grout from the tile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BEST PRACTICES<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stronger materials<\/strong> are easier to work with in this case and cutting a dart made out of weaker material may lead to difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penrose tiles <strong>can also have three colours<\/strong>, meaning each of the tile&#8217;s three \u2018faces\u2019 can be coloured differently and retain its pattern, emphasising the 3D nature of the rhombus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This works in your favour if you are open to more colour combinations for your floor or surface area. It should be noted that penrose tile patterns can have just two colours if desired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penrose tiles are a mathematical wonder, allowing for an <strong>infinite<\/strong> <strong>combination of tiling designs<\/strong> to choose from based on only two tiles. They make for an excellent surface area and are not mass produced due to each pattern\u2019s unique structure.
