S<strong>ometimes with just a little in the centre of the tile<\/strong>. The adhesives used today require a much more technical application, which consists of applying and &#8220;combing&#8221; them with a notched trowel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO &#8220;COMB&#8221; THE ADHESIVE?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we comb adhesive, <strong>we create channels that<\/strong> <strong>create a suction effect<\/strong> and help the tile to stick long before the adhesive finally dries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wiggling the tile back and forth collapses the channels<\/strong> created when combing the adhesive. <strong>This achieves full coverage on the tile.<\/strong> Another aspect of the channels is that they <strong>allow air to escape from underneath the tiles<\/strong> during this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This not only <strong>ensures better adhesion, but also makes the layer more compact<\/strong> and resistant to traffic and impact. This is due to its versatility and efficiency in the application of cementitious adhesives. Generally,<strong> its name includes the height of the tooth and its width<\/strong> (the distance between teeth) in millimetres. Therefore, we can have 3\u00d73, 4.5\u00d74.5, even up to 20\u00d720 trowels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, we will have to <strong>select the right trowel for the format we use<\/strong>. Although the thickness of the adhesive layer you want to leave is <strong>very important<\/strong> too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thickness you want under the tile is roughly half the thickness of the trowel notch. For example, <strong>if we use a 10&#215;10 trowel we aim to leave a 5mm layer<\/strong> after laying the tile and eliminating the air from the channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But be careful: <strong>if we are working at 45\u00ba with the trowel, we will not leave 10mm of height with a 10\u00d710 trowel<\/strong>, but approximately 6mm. When we eliminate the channels of the combing, the final layer would be around 3mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, <strong>it may be advisable to use a larger trowe<\/strong>l. RUBI offers trowels with the teeth at 45\u00ba, which means that combing with a 10\u00d710 <strong>does leave a height of 10mm.<\/strong> This is because <strong>the tooth <\/strong>is <strong>at 90\u00ba to the adhesive<\/strong>, while working with the trowel at 45\u00ba. Named due to the arrangement of its teeth (a higher one with a pointed finish &#8211; the Y, and a lower one in the shape of an inverted trapezoid &#8211; the W). It is <strong>mainly suitable for large formats<\/strong>. To do so, we will have to <strong>choose between a thick layer, thin, or medium layer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">THICK COAT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For the thick-bed technique, the trowel can be used as the tile installation tool, since<strong> it is not necessary to &#8220;comb&#8221; the bonding material<\/strong>, only to apply it correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must bear in mind that the thick layer technique for ceramic coatings<strong>&nbsp;can only be used<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For ceramic tiles with water absorption capacity E&gt;3% (if it is higher than 10%, water immersion and draining of the tiles <strong>is necessary<\/strong>).<\/li><li>For tiles with nominal size less than a surface area S\u2264 900 cm2<\/li><li>On external flooring <strong>in temperate climates<\/strong>, without risk of frost<\/li><li>On enclosures and partitions in conditions of maximum stability <strong>and laid on slabs of the same condition.<\/strong><\/li><li>Without compressible intermediate layers.<\/li><li>On surfaces <strong>with medium\/high water absorption<\/strong> and a certain surface texture.<\/li><li>On surfaces <strong>compatible with cement\/lime mortar<\/strong> (the application remains in the same condition).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"689\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/es\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Notched-Trowel-2-1024x689.jpg\" alt=\"Notched Trowel\" class=\"wp-image-51179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Notched-Trowel-2-1024x689.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Notched-Trowel-2-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Notched-Trowel-2-768x517.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Notched-Trowel-2-1536x1033.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Notched-Trowel-2.jpg 1772w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">THIN AND MEDIUM COAT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For thin and medium-bed techniques, <strong>we will always use the comb<\/strong> (notched trowel) as the tile installation tool with thicknesses of up to 5 mm in thin-bed and 15 mm in medium-bed. <strong>This type of tile installation is necessary for large tiles<\/strong> (larger than 900 cm2) but can also be used for smaller formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will always be used with cement-based adhesives or dispersion adhesives and reaction resins, but <strong>never with traditional cement mortars.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/es\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Table-1-EN.jpg\" alt=\"Notched Trowel\" class=\"wp-image-51114\" width=\"756\" height=\"592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Table-1-EN.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Table-1-EN-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Single bonding is where the <strong>bonding material is applied only on the substrate<\/strong>, combed (depending on the type and quality of the substrate we will use different sizes of comb), and then we place the tile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Double bonding is the application of the bonding material being applied to both the tile and the substrate.<\/strong> This guarantees perfect adhesion. It is only necessary to &#8220;comb&#8221; the material applied to the substrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another detail to consider when using a notched trowel is the<strong> variation in material consumption. <\/strong>The following table shows the <strong>approximate consumption<\/strong> for the most common and most used comb sizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/es\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Table-2-EN.jpg\" alt=\"Notched Trowel\" class=\"wp-image-51123\" width=\"747\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Table-2-EN.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Table-2-EN-300x96.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 747px) 100vw, 747px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TILE ADHESIVES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a final point, we should highlight three characteristics of adhesives that <strong>should be considered in the installation of tiles<\/strong> and especially in the application of the thin-bed technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are referring to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Paste pot life<\/strong>: the time since the paste has been mixed and exposed to room temperature and s<strong>till useable<\/strong>. Exceeding this time results in the loss of the bonding material characteristics.<\/li><li><strong>Open fixing time<\/strong>: the time we have to place the tile f<strong>rom the moment the bonding material has been spread on the substrate<\/strong>. If we exceed this time the material loses its bonding capacity.<\/li><li><strong>Rectification time<\/strong>: the time we have to <strong>correct the position of the tile<\/strong>&nbsp;once it has been installed.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> type of adhesive and the tile format are the most important aspects<\/strong> in the selection of the comb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you think of this information?
