And, when it comes to knowing how to measure flooring, <strong>the steps are fairly simple.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Measure the width (W) of your room with a tape measure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measure the length (L) of your room<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiply the length of your room by the width (LxW)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add 10% to account for any errors, mistakes, or broken tiles<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If it sounds simple, <strong>that\u2019s because it is<\/strong>. For example, if your room is 10 metres by 9 metres, you will need 90 m2 of tiles. However, we advise you add in an extra 10% to account for any mistakes you make in cutting, laying, and any damage that can happen in transit and handling of the tiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this simply multiply your figure by 1.1. Using the example above your calculation should look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L x W (10&#215;9) = 90<br>90 x 1.1 (the 10%)&nbsp; = 99<br><br>Which means <strong>the total square metres of tile flooring you will need is 99m2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>not every room is perfectly square<\/strong>. Most will have variations in the walls which makes it harder to accurately calculate the estimate for tiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TRANSLATE SQUARE FOOTAGE INTO NUMBER OF TILES NEEDED<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toppstiles.co.uk\/floor-tiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">buy your tiles<\/a><\/strong>, you\u2019ll need to know how many boxes you need because tile is sold in boxes. To determine this, <strong>you\u2019ll need to take the square metres of the room and divide it by the square metres of tile in a box.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t make the mistake of only buying exactly what you need. <strong>You\u2019re going to need extra tiles for mistakes, breaks, and cuts.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DRAW REFERENCE LINE TO MEASURE AREA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/AdobeStock_436549936-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"how to measure flooring\" class=\"wp-image-64656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/AdobeStock_436549936-1-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/AdobeStock_436549936-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/AdobeStock_436549936-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/AdobeStock_436549936-1.jpg 1181w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It might seem awkward to think about at first but to get the best tile installation results<strong>, you\u2019ll need to start from the centre of the room.<\/strong> This is true for all tile types, even those with irregular edges or patterns. The best way to start this process is to <strong>create two perpendicular lines of chalk that meet directly in the centre of the room.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll then have four equal sections, and you\u2019ll begin laying the tile down in the centre, <strong>working your way out in all directions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MARK THE WALL CENTERS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Measure the length of one wall and divide it in half. <strong>Use this measurement as the centre of the wall<\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/product\/master-line-marker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Make a mark<\/a><\/strong> on this point near the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Turn to the wall opposite this one and repeat.<\/strong> Even if the walls measure different lengths, the centre points of each wall should be the same. <strong>Now, take a nail and place it at one end of the room.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--HubSpot Call-to-Action Code --><span class=\"hs-cta-wrapper\" id=\"hs-cta-wrapper-60493a6a-c923-40aa-9c5d-04559988dcf8\"><span class=\"hs-cta-node hs-cta-60493a6a-c923-40aa-9c5d-04559988dcf8\" id=\"hs-cta-60493a6a-c923-40aa-9c5d-04559988dcf8\"><!--[if lte IE 8]><div id=\"hs-cta-ie-element\"><\/div><![endif]--><a href=\"https:\/\/cta-redirect.hubspot.com\/cta\/redirect\/6786297\/60493a6a-c923-40aa-9c5d-04559988dcf8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"hs-cta-img\" id=\"hs-cta-img-60493a6a-c923-40aa-9c5d-04559988dcf8\" style=\"border-width:0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/no-cache.hubspot.com\/cta\/default\/6786297\/60493a6a-c923-40aa-9c5d-04559988dcf8.png\"  alt=\"New call-to-action\"\/><\/a><\/span><script charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"https:\/\/js.hscta.net\/cta\/current.js\"><\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> hbspt.cta.load(6786297, '60493a6a-c923-40aa-9c5d-04559988dcf8', {\"useNewLoader\":\"true\",\"region\":\"na1\"}); <\/script><\/span><!-- end HubSpot Call-to-Action Code -->\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SNAP FIRST CHALK LINE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Take a chalk line and place it on the nail.<\/strong> Have someone hold this in place while you extend the chalk line directly across to the other centre point. Hold it down on the mark with one hand and with the other hand pull up on the line allowing it to snap back down, hitting the floor quickly, and <strong>creating a clear line of chalk<\/strong>. You can also use a laser to mark these lines if you have one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do this again on the other two walls <strong>so you now have two chalk lines<\/strong> across the length and width of the room. You can also use a laser for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LAY TILE USING REFERENCE LINES<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To lay the tile correctly, <strong>start in the centre and work outwards<\/strong>. Place your first tile down against the intersection of your two chalk lines. Complete one whole section out of the four first<strong>. This will give you a good idea of how much material you\u2019ll need<\/strong> to finish the other sections. At RUBI UK and Ireland we have two systems: <strong>Our clip and wedge DELTA system and our twist cap <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubi.com\/en\/product\/cyclone-flat-base\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CYCLONE system<\/strong> <\/a>which are available nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to fill the rest of the sections is to always leave the section where the room\u2019s door is for last. This way, <strong>you\u2019re able to walk in and out of the room without ruining the adhesive under the tiles.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DETERMINE YOUR JOINT SIZE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though all the tiles in a box look the same to the naked eye, this isn\u2019t the case. <strong>Not all tiles are exactly the same<\/strong> with cuts that line up flawlessly. This is why tiles are installed with spacing between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before installing the tiles, <strong>determine your joint size<\/strong>. These gaps are what will eventually be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bal-adhesives.com\/products\/bal-grout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">filled with grout<\/a><\/strong>. Depending on the design<strong>, the size of the tiles<\/strong>, and the materials being used, the size may change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using rectified tiles means that you\u2019ll have the ability to place the tiles close together. If you\u2019re not using these processed tiles, <strong>then it\u2019s best to keep them a bit more spaced out.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is how to determine your gap size. Tiles with irregular edges should be 5mm apart. <strong>Tiles that have smoother edges can be placed closer together with gap sizes of 2 or 3mm<\/strong>. Keep in mind that tiles placed on a wall need less gap space than tiles placed on a floor. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ALWAYS PURCHASE MORE<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important thing to remember before beginning a tile installation project is to always have extra tiles. <strong>We can\u2019t stress this enough<\/strong>. Don\u2019t wait until halfway through the installation job to get more tiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it might seem easy to just go to the store and buy another box of tiles, <strong>it\u2019s not always that simple<\/strong>. You might learn that the store no longer has that tile in stock <strong>or does not have enough for what you need<\/strong>.
